So I saw a story today about how Microsoft has begun the 2 year countdown for Windows XP to reach
end-of-support. Amazing! Not sure if its a tribute to the quality of the work (ahem) or just user intransigence but yes XP is still chugging along. I've read some estimates that as many as 45% of Windows users are still on XP mainly because they are used to it, it has lower hardware requirements and it's stable. If people are happy with XP and want to keep using it I think they should be able to, but let Microsoft charge them for security updates and disable the network stack if it is not kept up to date with those patches.
This accomplishes several things:
1.) It allows Microsoft to move on to other things and focus resources.
2.) It would allow people to keep using XP but not unpatched.
3.) It encourages people to do the reasonable thing which is buy a new OS once a decade... ;-)
